Trust your training, trust your body
Over a month ago I finished a 50-miler, yet, right now it feels like a struggle to run even 5, and that. is. okay. I now know my body enough to know that it all changes, all the time, nothing stays the same, ever. The minute one stops working out the body goes down, yet, on the flipside, the minute one begins working out again the body meets the challenge, so, healthy body changes happen ever.....so....slowwwwly, in both directions. When I was in my 20's I'd often suddenly realize I had not run for some time and to alleviate the guilt I'd go out and pump out 5 miles and then be totally debilitated the next day. So, I now know that my abilities are not gone when I change my workouts, that although it decreates, it does not disappear instatly, it can only come back slowly, with deliberate and incremental changes to my running over time. Trust your training and your body. It all ultimately comes down to trust and trust only builds with experience. So yes, I will work my ass off to 'get it back'. Also, even though things seem less serious right now in my training, that is not the case; I am deliberately strengthening other parts of my body with weightlifting. Also, how amazing is this human body we live in? With every new challenge my body has risen to the occasion, never letting me down. I don't only need to get my body ready, my beliefs, my resolve, the images I place in my head all play a huge part in making everything fall into place in the end. In 10 months I would have been working my ass off to be ready to run 62 miles. I will aim to do prepare for this by first and foremost listening, respecting and properly pacing my body through the training.

Dream big.....
While growing up, my mom use to say, "Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are." After my grandma's funeral and hearing other family members use similar stories to describe her influence in their lives, I realized that my mom must have gotten this wisdom from her mom. Nevertheless, I have always taken my mom's advice to heart and do much believe that your friends reflect back who you are. This past weekend I ran a 50 miler and the race was run simultaneously with other races, a 50K, 100K, 100 miler and a 10 miler. In finishing the 50, while it may be an enormous accomplishment in the outside world, in this tribe, the goal most people aim for is the 100. Not to say I am to proud of my accomplishment, I am very proud of finishing this race. Yet, now that I have been introduced to this new world I can see how the 100 is possible. Being around people who think a 100 miler as possible makes you think those very thoughts. So I do think that a 100 miler is in my future, maybe not next year, but most possibly the year after. Yet, first things first. I am planning n working on my wight and increasing my general flexibility before undertaking another enormous dream. In the meantime, I will continue to build my tribe with the very best people I can find.

Closer to that finish line
Yesterday I called MainStay Suites in Alcoa, Tennessee and reserved 3 days for my 50-miler race in March of 2018. This was just one step closer to getting this dream to come true. Next, reserve a plane ticket, but I am waiting for the price to be right.
There is a lot one has to do physically to get ready for any race, yet, getting ones mind to go along these crazy distances also takes a lot of work, it's half the battle. To prepare for this I have been doing a lot of visualizing, trying to picture myself at that finish line and getting ready for the high level of discomfort and maybe even pain that I would have to go through. I have been reading about running long distances and also watching Youtube videos after Youtube videos created by people who have successfully completed the distance and have some valuable advice to give. Each one of these activities prepares me mentally and the more work I do on this end, the more I feel I am getting emotionally ready to tackle the distance. Whether or not I complete the distance will remain a mystery until that day, but I am surely going to do my best now to get all my ducks in order. No rock will be left unturned, giving this my all.

Do what you fear most....
The Wheel of Fortune is constantly spinning, always something new in the horizon, we never get a rest from fearing what may lie around the corner. When things are going well in our lives, we always fear what may happen next to ruin our current state of peace. When things are bad, we fear this stage may last long and cause continuous discomfort and pain. There is a way out of this constant fear of 'what may come next' and it's found in confronting it head-on.
Planning for races, long races especially, brings such a sense of awe and fear that it almost takes my breath away every time I think about the enormity of the challenge. I just signed up for my first 50 miler and I have NO idea how I will ever get this done. I know I can, with proper training and the proper mental game all is possible, yet, still, I cannot fathom YET all it would take to cross that line; it's a terrifying thought.
One interesting thing about fear though is that once you have faced the fear and defeated it, you know it is possible and no matter how big the next challenge is you now know it is possible to defeat fear. My daughter did gymnastics for some time and when it came time to do her first ever performance in front of a crowd she froze. She told me in very dramatic fashion that she could not, would not, do it. I told her that no matter what she needed to do it, that only in seeing it through would she ever feel right and that if she caved now she would forever cave at all challenges. Sure enough she did it and from that challenge forward she knew the fear was a mere facade; she knew from that day forward now to believe the fear, but to face it and only in facing it, would the anxiety surrounding it go away.

Getting that itch again........
I am getting that itch again to sign up for a race.....this time a 50K. My plan is to run a 50K race nearby home in Springfield, VA about 3 weeks-4 after the 2016 Marine Corps Marathon; therefore banking on the fact that I can use the marathon training and the marathon run itself as the training run for the 50K. I know, I am quite a little genius. The main issue now is WILL I BE ABLE to finish the race before the cutoff. Things are looking quite hopeful. One, my foot feels fine after yesterday's 7 miles. That is HUGE!! Second, I was able to finish the 7 miles in a 12.5 minute/mile pace! Granted this is treadmill miles, so I cannot be too sure this translates to my real pace on land...but, it cannot be that OFF, can it?
So which race am I thinking of? Well, I went onto the Trail and Ultra Running Group on Facebook and asked for a flat-ish 50K with a forgiving cut-off near my home and near the MCM date (third week in October). One race that stood out amongst the few suggestions was the Rosaryville Veterans Day 50K . Sounds fine with the exception that it's, not two, but THREE 9 point something loops.....emotionally, loops are a bit tough to swallow. But, it's the most possible one so far.
In doing research for the race I always look up last year's times. Having once before been THE LAST person in a race makes me keenly aware of other last place folks. As you can see, last year one person, age 24 came in at 9:02 hours....so this gives me hope that maybe, just maybe their 8 hour cut-off is not so hard and fast. Of course, I have no intention on going past 8 hours, but it's just nice to know. There is 480 minutes in 8 hours, for a 31 mile race that's about 15.5 minute mile average. Half of me is convinced I can do this EASY, but another part of me keeps reminding me, "it's a trail race", paces are often a bit slower due to obstacles, hills, and roots.

Tips to running your first 50K- All there is to know
Click on each info, and you will be directed to the source link:
* Think quality over quantity
* Experienced runners alternate between slow long runs and short runs focused on speed.
* Take breaks when you need it. "Don't be a slave to the schedule".
* Take tapering seriously
* If you can afford it get a coach
* Race by feel not pace. Because you are running on varied terrain, work more on maintaining an "even perceived effort, also avoid "spiking your heart rate"
* Eat early and often. Forcing gel down your throat may not be fun, but there are huge benefits to getting the right food.
* Keep it simple....when prepping a drop bag, no need to pack the universe.
* crucial that you've run a marathon or two before taking on a 50K (I did not follow this advice by the way. I ran a 50K before my first marathon)
* schedule a tempo-like run after your long runs.
* Incorporate running hills and doing hill repeats into your routine
* A trail 50K may take several hours longer than your marathon
* Pace varies depending on terrain of each section
* Be smart walk up hills and run the downs and the flats
* Find something that works for you to prevent chafing
* Fueling takes practice, make sure you work on this during your long runs.
* In an ultra, most people don't run the whole time.
* Give yourself at least 3 months to train....at least
* sign up soon, that will be a huge motivator on its own
* Practice running efficiently with as little wasted energy as possible
* Get lots of sleep 2 night before your ultra
* Start the race slowly....slower than a marathon even
* If passed, let them pass
* Have a mantra
* remember this quote from Lance Armstrong: "Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever."
* Eat about 100 calories per hour
* Know the course and the terrain - do your research
* Occasionally train with partners who are a tad faster
* Maintain weekly tempo sessions for speed
* some training schedules vary between hard/easy weeks to offset the affect of maybe ramping up the miles to fast
* soon you will notice you are stronger and recover faster
* the mid-week, semi-long run can be dropped if weeks are too tough.....better to remain uninjured

* Great pictures of the race: HERE
What more do we know:
* You can sleep in the back of your car, sleep in a camper, tents and air mattress or a hotel. Bring a propane grill to cook up some dinner
* "A fairly low key and low fee event, it draws about 200 runners to run through some rugged trail systems and on some gravel and fire roads that weave up and down the Capon Valley"
* "This ultra is different then the other ultras I have run on the account that this ultra is directed and volunteered by a locals that are not ultra runners."
"this race has approximately 30 stream crossings"
"We stayed at the Courtyard so that the kids could enjoy the pool that evening and the next day. We went to my favorite restaurant; Carrabba's Italian Grill."/"The only downside was the lack of modern bathroom facilities. The only option were outhouse/privy-type potties. "
* "This first section was a great mix of surfaces including backyards, creek crossings, trails and dirt roads covering shy of 4 miles before reaching the first aid station" and "Miles 4 through 10 were a roller coaster of terrain and emotions for me. The hills were often and steep."
* You can stay at "Capon Springs and Farms (kinda like the Catskills in Dirty Dancing, check it out!) "
* "A very rural area without cell phone service or accurate GPS information"
* "Sleeping in a tent is actually my preferred pre-race rest... it's cheaper, you are close to the starting line, and it feels like an adventure. When all was said and done I probably clocked out for about 6 or 7 hours of decent sleep and woke up without an alarm around 6 AM"

Online resources for 50K race training schedule
I have been considering doing this 50K that is taking place in Virginia in August. Below are the list of resources I have been looking at to see if this is even possible. I am still on the fence about it and will be deciding in the next few weeks. Right now I am just trying to focus on the half-marathon run I have coming up this Sunday and trying to stay calm. Bring a mom, there are a lot more factors that go into the planning of any race, such as who will have the car, how will my son get to his baseball game without the car? who will watch my youngest? getting the kids ready for me not to be there that morning, etc. I am very excited about the race, yet, until I pass the first mile I will not be totally relaxed. Once the run begins I will be fine and will be able to relax into a rhythm....
Below are the links I have been looking at....will come back later and give an update on which ones were most helpful. So far, I am just getting informed about the framework of a training for a 50K and how it might differ from a marathon, there are some very significant differences which I will share later. If you have done a 50K, I would love your feedback on which sites helped you most. Thanks!!! Have a great week.

Running on the Sun (a running movie)
So what is your favorite running movie? I have not watched enough of them to yet feel I have a 'favorite'. I have watched My Run, The Spirit of the Marathon, The Terry Fox story and last night I watched Running on the Sun about ultra-runners running a famous 135 mile race in the desert . Above is the link to the movie on Youtube....Warning, it comes in 9 parts. After each part, Youtube will have a link to the next one on the top left of the screen.
